Colonials Capture California Winter League Title

Two Palm Springs teams were in the final four of the California Winter League playoffs only to be beaten by the same team.

The fourth seeded New York Colonials upset both teams and won the California Winter League championship by beating the Palm Springs Chill 10-3.

This game was essentially over after two innings. The Colonials jumped out to a 9-0 lead going into the bottom of the 2nd.

Edgar Lebron Jr. started the onslaught with a triple to drive in two.  Lebron ended the day with four RBIs.

Palm Springs got runners in scoring position in the first three innings, but could not get the key hit to create a long rally to put them back into the game.

The Chill cut the lead to 9-3 and Dakota Freese kept the Colonials off the board with a strong relief appearance fanning five in his three innings of pitching.

But Colonials pitcher Dylan Thompson was even more impressive. He went six strong innings only giving up one earned run to earn the victory.

Power Eliminated in Semifinals

In an offensive battle, the New York Colonials eliminated the top seed Palm Springs Power today nine to six.

The Colonials jumped out to a five nothing lead in the bottom of the first. Kalani Brackenridge singled in two runs in the inning and finished with three RBIs.cwl-logo-black-text-thumbnail

The Power erased the lead in the next two innings with one in the first and four in the second. Nicholas Buckner led off the second with a mammoth solo shot to center.

Pitching took over the next few innings as the teams were tied at six going into the final inning. Martin Windisch threw six innings for the Power only allowing one earned run.

Errors in the top of the sixth by the Power allowed three Colonials to score.

Kyano Cummings shut down the Power 1-2-3 in the seventh as the Colonials won nine to six.

The Colonials will move onto play the Palm Springs Chill in the California Winter League finals at noon on Sunday.

 

Power Battle Back to Beat Blue Sox

Despite trailing by four runs, the Palm Springs Power came back to beat the Washington Blue Sox 8-6 in California Winter League action Sunday afternoon.baseballscore-1-29

Christopher Burks had a double and three RBIs for the Power as they improve to 7-1.

Joe Wittig had two RBI and scored a run.

Takashi Miyoshi struggled on the mound after having had success at the plate this season.

Miyoshi got the win, but gave up four earned runs in less than three innings of work on top of walking six batters.

The Palm Springs Power battles the Palm Springs Chill at 12:30 Monday at Palm Springs Stadium.

Power top Northstars 5-4

On a perfect 72 degree day, the Palm Springs Power beat the Manitoba Northstars 5-4 on a walk off hit by Takashi Miyoshi.screen-shot-2017-01-29-at-10-57-30-am

Down to their last two outs with runners on second and third, the Palm Springs Power shortstop lined a ball into the gap scoring Christopher Burks and Curtis Gomez.

Gomez had two doubles and an RBI in four at bats.

Adam Falcon and Tanner Kiest struck out a combined 10 in six innings.

Casey Dill’s squad moved to 6-1 in the California Winter League and play today at 1:30 against the Washington Blue Sox.

Power Win Pitching Duel 3-2

It took 4 hours of work by California Winter League officials to get the baseball field ready for today’s baseball action after all the rain in the Coachella Valley, but baseball games continued today and the Palm Springs Power played a good one.screen-shot-2017-01-21-at-6-28-14-pm

Peyton Lobdell was dominant striking out 5 batters in his first 2 innings of work.

The Power offense rallied for two in the second led by DH Marquis Kidd who smacked a line drive into left field, which the left fielder kicked all the way to right field like he was Pele. Joe Wittig scored to put them up 1-0 and the Power went onto win 3-2 as they improved to 2-0 on the season.

California Winter League Releases 2017 Schedule

The California Winter League released their schedule today. Over 300 players will report on January 16 to Palm Springs with games starting on the 19th. cwl-logo-black-text-thumbnail

The CWL is the official winter league of the Frontier League and showcases players looking to sign professional contracts. Over 50 players signed contracts at the end of the season with Frontier League teams.

Highlights from Palm Springs Baseball Tryouts

As the dreams of baseball players are being realized in the World Series, 75 players flocked to Palm Springs to try and continue their dreams of a professional baseball career.

Palm Springs Power Manager Casey Dill and the Southern Illinois Miners put together the event consisting of players from 17-34 years old.

Scouts from the major, minor, and international leagues evaluated the players as they went through drills at historic Palm Springs Stadium.

Force Sweep Power in SCCBL Championship Series

The San Diego Force completed the sweep of the Palm Springs Power in the SCCBL Championship series.

Force pitcher Bobby Orozco quieted the Power bats in 6 dominant innings.

It was 7-0 before the Power were able to get on the board with a small rally in the top of the 6th cutting the lead to 7-3.

But the Force scored another run and never looked back.

The SCCBL will return in June of 2017. In the meantime, the California Winter League will return to Palm Springs in January as baseball players from around the country come to Palm Springs Stadium in hopes of signing a professional contract.

The San Diego Force beat the Palm Springs Power 5-3 in Game one of the SCCBL Championship Series.

Doubles machine John Mauldin knocked in the first run with a double to right scoring Colby Schultz.  Ryan Mota scored Mauldin even though he grounded into a double play.

The Power would not score again until Brock Hale out of BYU pulled a homer over the left field wall.

Palm Springs threatened in the bottom of the ninth putting runners on first and second with two outs, but they could not get them home as Andrew Brown struck out to end the game.

Game two of the SCCBL Championship Series will move to Palm Springs Stadium on Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.

The Palm Springs Power advanced to the S-C-C-B-L championship series with a 4-2 victory over the Arroyo Seco Sentinals Thursday night and will play the San Diego Force on Friday at Grossmont College at 4:30. Game 2 will be in Palm Springs on Saturday at 7:05.

In Major League Baseball action, the Padres blew a 4 run lead with 6 outs to go in St Louis as the Cards beat the friars 6-5.

The Dodgers handed Steven Strasburg his first loss as the LA beat the Washington Nationals 6-3. Justin Turner homered twice and Julio Urias pitched 4 solid innings.

The red hot Angels had the day off and will take on the Astros tomorrow with Shoe-maker getting the start for the Halos.
